Dog Age Calculator to convert dog age into human years

Dog Age Calculator

Compare a dog’s age with an illustrative human-age equivalent. Dogs do not age at a constant seven human years per dog year, and size and breed affect ageing. This simple model is useful for explaining that difference, not for deciding a pet’s care requirements.

How the calculation works

This page uses an explicitly simplified illustration: the first year corresponds to about 15 human years and the second adds about 9. After age two, it adds 4, 5, 6 or 7 human years for small, medium, large or giant categories respectively. The later-year rates are illustrative choices, not validated measurements.

Worked example

A five-year-old dog gives about 36 human years in the small category and 39 in the medium category with this model. Choosing a different size changes the estimate. These numbers should not be interpreted as an exact biological age.

Why the multiply-by-seven rule is weak

The first years include rapid development, and later ageing does not proceed identically across breeds. A single multiplier hides that pattern. Even a size-aware chart remains an approximation and should state the model behind its numbers.

A better use for an age comparison

Use the result as an educational conversation starter and keep your dog’s actual age in its care records. Veterinary recommendations should be matched to the individual animal. Our cat and general pet-age articles explain how other species require different comparisons.

Important limitations

Veterinary life-stage assessment considers more than an age conversion, including breed, adult size, health and lifestyle. AAHA guidance describes canine care by life stage. Ask your veterinarian about checkups, nutrition and exercise rather than changing care from the comparison number alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is the result exact?

No. It is a clearly labelled illustrative comparison.

Can it identify my dog’s veterinary life stage?

No. A veterinarian considers breed, size, health and other factors.
