Suppose you know someone is exactly 28 years, 4 months, and 15 days old on 1 January 2026. To find their date of birth, subtract step by step.
Step 1: Subtract the Days
You want to subtract 15 days from 1 January 2026. Since 1 is less than 15, you borrow from the month. So, go back to December 2025, which has 31 days. As a result, the day becomes 1 + 31 = 32. Now subtract: 32 − 15 = 17 days.
Step 2: Subtract the Months
After borrowing one month for the day subtraction, you now have 0 months in January, so January becomes December of the previous year (12). You need to subtract 4 months. So, 12 − 4 = 8, which is August.
Step 3: Subtract the Years
Now subtract 28 years from 2025 (since you borrowed earlier). So, 2025 − 28 = 1997. The result: 17 August 1997.
